An idea on how to study modules of a degree at uni, in the future ?

*** FOLKS, this is a bit long so only answer it if this subject matter, and the question(s) posted interest you, give it a read through please! ***

e-learning, e-tuition, e-seminars, e-tutorials... this stuff is an area that I don't think has been fully exploited and embraced by academic institutions.

This is what I was thinking:

sometimes the enthusiasm to work hard, study, learn, consolidate material is hampered by factors encompassing the 'in class' and/or 'in seminar hall' environment.

There is always a select few students who might make a few other students academic experience and learning somewhat unappealing, and then there are financial issues surrounding commuting to and from a campus site for those who do not live in halls of residences and their dorm rooms.

Some just underperform and fail to hit their potential in these environments and its not necessarily always their fault, sure life is about 'people skills' and 'cooperative effort' , but we've heard it all before - team building skills this, that and the other.

If a student doesn't fulfil his potential and under achieves due to 'on site/on campus/ in class' experiences, does that REALLY and TRULY indicate his 'academic worth/brilliance' ? does it ?

I propose, or simply offer a solution to overcome this nuisance obstacle, which allows those students who feel they can study certain modules of their degree, from the secure confinement of their home/off site off campus locations, as opposed to in class.

the technology I propose is Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networking (ATM) , using a hybrid guided and unguided media (fibre optic cabling and microwave transmission at select points/areas of the network).

This technology once embraced, will be utlised in a 'private network' orientated scheme, allowing dedicated channels to deilver stupendously fast up/download of live video streaming (errorless and flawless, beating the bindings off of anything we know about in video conferencing in the public sector heh), provide CD quality sound and cater for even the most demanding of multimedia education application.

Students will be able to 'attend a seminar' from the confines of their own home, hear the lecturerer speak - and if need be, be able to e-raise their hand and ask the lecturer any question they bloody well want to. A suitable earpiece/micpiece tool will be deployed on the student/lecturer side of things.

thats basicaly it in a nutshell, e-learning heh.

to allow a student to enjoy this facility, he should we simply register this subject/module/course and tick the box that said 'e-learning' and they will pay 35% of the original module price to take it.

what do u reckon ? a good idea for the future ?

It's a pretty good idea but not really original.
No offense. Not trying to be rude or anything.
All the basic elements of this (online learning, webcam learning) have all been done before on television shows.
It's a great idea though, and you should definitely run with it.
But it all seems very high tech and very expensive.
Too expensive for state schools.
Too high tech and unnecessary for small private colleges.
The only colleges I could see trying this out are ivy league colleges.
It's gonna be very expensive to put web cams, computers, all of the necessary equipment into just one classroom, when the administration could be sharing that money amongst improvements for many different classrooms.
Run with it. Work out the kinks. Think of a more inexpensive way to go about it.
Then you might have something.
